“Language and Symbol Use in the Twenty-First Century”

The Institute of General Semantics is sponsoring the 2-day symposium titled “Language and Symbol Use in the Twenty-First Century,” which will be hosted at The Princeton Club in New York City October 25-27, 2013. The symposium will feature the 61st Alfred Korzybski Memorial Lecture, which will be given by Terrence Deacon.

Send papers, proposals, and inquiries on this year’s theme, “Language and Symbol Use in the Twenty-First Century,” by August 31, 2013.

Terrence W. Deacon

The Institute of General Semantics is pleased to announce that the 61st Alfred Korzybski Memorial Lecturer will be anthropologist Terrence W. Deacon, Ph.D.

Dr. Deacon is a professor of biological anthropology and neuroscience and the chair of anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley.  He is the author of the book Incomplete Nature: How Mind Emerged from Matter.

The 61st Alfred Korzybski Memorial Lecture will take place on Friday evening, October 25, 2013, at the Princeton Club in New York City.  For more details on the event, watch the Institute of General Semantics website.

About the Editors

Corey Anton is Professor of Communication Studies at Grand Valley State University and author of dozens of scholarly papers and book chapters, as well as author of the book Communication Uncovered: General Semantics and Media Ecology (2011). His research spans the fields of existential phenomenology, media ecology, semiotics, communicology, the philosophy of communication, and multidisciplinary communication theory.

Lance Strate is Professor of Communication and Media Studies and Director of the Professional Studies in New Media program at Fordham University.  He is the author of On the Binding Biases of Time and Other Essays on General Semantics and Media Ecology as well as editor of a number of books on media ecology.
