GSDF Help Guide
  • This discussion details common instructions and help for using the General Semantics Discussion Forum.

    If you need help on a particular matter related to using the GSDF, start a new discussion and include the tag #help.

    If you find you're unable to log in or start a new discussion, you may also contact the IGS Webmaster here.
  • Subscribing to Discussions

    Let's say there is a discussion going on that you really like. You didn't start it, but you'd like to follow it. In particular, you'd like to get emailed when a new comment is posted to that discussion.

    Two things need to be in place for you to be emailed when comments on discussions you didn't start take on new comments:

    1. You need to subscribe to bookmarked discussions.
    2. You need to bookmark that particular discussion.

    To subscribe to bookmarked discussions

    1. In the left sidebar, click on your username.
    2. On the next screen, below the search box you will see several account options. Click on My Preferences.
    3. A popup box will emerge with a list of checkboxes. Find the last box ("Notify me when people comment on my bookmarked discussions."). Check that box then click Save.
    4. You are now subscribed to receive emails when someone comments on a discussion you've bookmarked.

    To bookmark a discussion

    1. Find the discussion you want to follow.
    2. At the top of the discussion, at its first post, you will find in the upper-right corner a gray star. Click on it. The star will turn yellow.
    3. You have now bookmarked a discussion.

    When both tasks have been done, you should be able to receive email notifications when a new comment is posted to that particular discussion. (Be sure to check your spam filter in case the notifcation is filtered by your email provider.)

  • GSDF Not Recognizing Your Password?

    It seems that the forum software may at times not recognize your password. If you find you are entering your email address and password correctly but the GSDF is not recognizing it, try some of the following steps:

    1. Navigate to a different page to try signing in.
    2. Try signing in via the "Sign In" link in the upper-right corner or as an alternative the "Sign In' link in the left sidebar.
    3. Try signing in from inside a particular discussion.
    4. Don't select "Keep me signed in" when trying to sign in.

    The exact conditions that lead to these lockouts are currently unclear, but it does seems that with some perseverance in trying different login methods you should be able to get into your account if the forum software doesn't recognize you.

    If you still can't get in, contact the IGS Webmaster (see the first post) and request a reset of your password.
  • Emoticons

    The GSDF currently supports emoticons. To display an emoticon, type the following character combinations in your posts.

    ICONS
    image =  ->
    image =  :?:
    image =  :!:
    image =  <3

    SMILE
    image =  :-)
    image =  =)
    image =  ^^
    image =  :)

    LAUGH
    image =  :-D

    WINK

    image =  8-)

    TONGUE-OUT
    image =  :-P
    image =  :P

    SAD
    image =  :-(
    image =  :(

    ASSORTED
    image = "Goofy" =  8-|
    image = "Huh?" =  8-?
    image = "Oh No!" =  8-x
    image = "Scream" =  :-O
    image = "Suspect" =  ;-|
    image = "Mad" =  >:-(
    image = "Ninja" =  (8)
    image = "Evil" =  :-E
    image = "Puke" =  8-P

  • HTML Code vs. BBCode

    The GSDF currently supports HTML code in its posts. You may want to preview your posts to ensure they will display as intended; some HTML code (like table code) doesn't seem to be supported.

    To review common HTML codes, see the link for HTML code guides in the left sidebar (near the bottom of the page). It will launch a new window so you don't interfere with your current draft. You may also click here to access HTML code guides:

    Note: The GSDF was supporting BBCode until it was discovered to conflict with emoticons, so BBCode is currently not supported though it may still work. (BBCode involves writing code inside brackets.)
