If you read many of Postman's books he generally includes an accolade or positive reference to Korzybski among his many other references.
His writing has been, to me, so easy to understand and always made me feel smarter.
However, I don't see any of that thought-provoking writing in the current crop in Etc. or the other (few) publications from the Institute.
I understand Lance Strate worked with Postman and I believe they collaborated on articles together - so what happened to Postman's brilliance? Has Strate picked up the ball? Are there others? Whatever happened to Weingartner?
I don't see any current articles or writing along the lines that Postman pursued in or out of the general semantics forum. Not since he was the editor of Etc. has there been much discussion or thought given to media and the symbolic logic it produces.
Postman, it seems to me, had such large/grand ideas about media, technology and education that general semantics could have been a great benefit to the educational system of the US specifically. How has it not had any inroads into the current educational system?
I would have thought that someone who left so large a 'footprint' on my psyche (and I surmise many others) would have had some devotees or left a legacy that others would have pursued. I see no evidence of it in or out of the general semantics umbrella - sad, in my estimation...
Why not pay tribute to him by starting something yourself? Maybe start a blog about Postman's work, write some essays, conduct some workshops? It may help draw out other fans of his work.
For those of you in the US, there's an interesting project called Skillshare. It would be cool if someone used it to do a workshop on Media studies or anything else related to General Semantics.
I agree with Neville, SpudNV. Why not try something yourself!
Myself, I came to general semantics in the era post-Postman. I found a lot of the writings of the contributors in the mid-1990s to be very enjoyable. In the last decade, there has been more of an influence of media ecology thinking and academics, a lot of whom where touched by Postman as I understand.
