E-Prime, ΣEOS, and the General Semantics Paradigm:
Revolution, Devolution, or Evolution?

Lisa J. Roberts

Foreword by D. David Bourland, Jr.

Lisa Roberts takes us on an intriguing journey as she examines developments, debates, and arguments that have erupted within general semantics, as well as new developments that have emerged from general semantics, particularly E-Prime and the ΣEOS Model (familiarly known as "the SEOS Model").

In doing this, she also treats us to an informative history of our discipline and its literature, a concise outline of general semantics fundamentals, and brief but fascinating profiles of many of the "players" involved.

Since the beginning of the discipline in 1933, controversies have dogged the general semantics community. The author sees this "intellectual infighting" as inevitable struggles between paradigms.

For this analysis, adapted from her Master's thesis at South Dakota State University, the author uses the theory of paradigms and paradigm shifts that Thomas Kuhn first presented in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962).  As practitioners find anomalies in a given paradigm, they begin to ask questions that stretch the boundaries of that earlier paradigm. They then seek new methods and new types of answers, setting off the war between the "old" and the "new."
