The Christine L. Nystrom L. Prize
The Nystrom Prize is awarded to a student currently enrolled in a masters or doctoral level graduate program for outstanding scholarship in the form of a paper on the topic of symbols and meaning. The winning entry will be published in the IGS journal, ETC: A Review of General Semantics, and receive a cash prize of $500. Entry requirements: A letter from an advisor attesting to the student’s current status, and a paper taking the form of a scholarly article
About Christine L. Nystrom
Christine L. Nystrom, also known as Chris, was born on March 23rd 1941 in Mt. Vernon, New York. Nystrom received a B.A. in Philosophy and English in 1962 from Washington Square College, followed by an M.A in Language and Communication in 1966 from Teachers College, Columbia University. In 1973 Nystrom earned her Ph.D. at the School of Education, NYU. Nystrom produced the first doctoral dissertation in the Ph.D. in media ecology program which dealt with Media ecology as a coherent theoretical framework. Nystrom was considered a pioneer in the field of Media Ecology, and taught in the Media Ecology program for over 30 years. Nystrom’s work includes “The Genes of Culture: Towards a Theory of Symbols, Meaning, and Media, Volume 1 and Volume 2".
